The Hurricanes' second row stocks have taken another hit, with South African lock Andries Ferreira departing the Wellington side, having not played a single minute of Super Rugby.

Signed at the beginning of the month to replace the injured Sam Lousi, 28-year old Ferreira has suffered a knee injury, and will return home to South Africa after a mutual agreement between himself and the Hurricanes.

Coach John Plumtree said he was upset to be losing Ferreira, but the Hurricanes are in need of a fit lock with Lousi being ruled out until the end of the current Super Rugby season.

"It's disappointing for us as Andries is an excellent player who had the potential to play an important part in our campaign," he said.

No replacement player has been confirmed to have signed for the Hurricanes in Ferreria's place.
