Sonny Bill Williams says he is travelling to meet controversial UFC champion and fellow Muslim Khabib Nurmagomedov in Sydney.
The All Blacks midfielder posted a photo of himself and his son at Auckland Airport on Instagram, wrapping up the caption; see you soon brother @khabib_nurmagomedov.
Judging by his social media account, Williams has long been a fan of Nurmagomedov, posting on Twitter before and after the Russian’s victory over Conor McGregor at UFC 229 in October.
The event descended into farce after Nurmagomedov submitted McGregor, with a wild brawl breaking out involving the fighters and both of their corners when Nurmagomedov jumped out of the octagon to attack one of McGregor's cornerman.
Nurmagomedov, who grew up in Dagestan in Russia, is 27-0 in the UFC.
