Scott Robertson open to taking All Blacks head coaching job if it's offered to him

November 27, 2018

The Crusaders coach is a credible option to replace Steve Hansen.

Crusaders coach Scott Robertson kept his cards close to his chest over the prospect of becoming the next All Blacks coach, following the shock retirement of front runner Joe Schmidt overnight.

As Ireland coach Schmidt revealed that he'll walk away from coaching after next year's World Cup, and with All Blacks boss Steve Hansen's future unclear after 2019, Robertson is now among a handful of candidates in contention to take the reigns of the New Zealand side.

In Christchurch today Robertson was asked about his chances now that a major contender in Schmidt has dropped out of the race.

"You look at everything every time this thing comes up," Robertson said.

"When you are a coach, you have to look at all the options - that's what I'm doing at the moment.

"The All Black job doesn't come up that often does it? When it does, you have to have a really good look at it.

"The decision from Steve (Hansen) will play a really big part of it."
