SBW laughs off 'Bledisloe saviour' tags: 'They don't watch too much rugby'

August 13, 2019

Australian media have singled out the 34-year-old as a key man as the ABs aim to retain the Bledisloe Cup.

All Blacks midfielder Sonny Bill Williams has laughed off Australian suggestions that he can be the saving grace for this weekend's second Bledisloe Cup Test.

With the 34-year old having missed last weekend's 47-26 defeat to the Wallabies in Perth, Williams is back in the All Blacks' ranks this week, his return timely due to the injury of fellow midfielder Jack Goodhue.

However, with Australia's Daily Telegraph describing Williams as the All Blacks' 'Bledisloe saviour', the veteran midfielder isn't getting carried away by any trans-Tasman praise.

"I think if you really look into it, you'll understand that rugby doesn't really get much coverage in Australia," Williams said.

"There's not really much viewers over there, they don't really watch too much rugby.

"The affiliation between me and rugby league, weight it up. Over here we know that's not the truth.

"I guess for the average person over there that picks up the paper, it's something to read about, I guess."

Williams will be competing with both Ngani Laumape and Anton Lienert-Brown for a spot in the All Blacks' midfield, that team to be announced on Thursday morning.
