All Blacks star Sonny Bill Williams has hinted that his playing future could carry on past next year's World Cup, and that a return to rugby league could also be on the cards.
Now 33, Williams' glittering career appears to be winding to a close, with next year's Rugby World Cup in Japan mooted as a likely retirement point, with the 51-Test veteran also studying part time .
However, in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, Williams says he still feels like he has more to give, suggesting he could play on into his mid to late 30s.
The All Blacks assistant coach says the midfield selection battle is heating up.
"I've enjoyed the process so far," he began.
"And I have to think about what I will do in the future. I am positioning myself in case that becomes an option. I am enjoying doing a bit of studying and keeping my brain going in a different way.
"The last couple of years have been tough with injury, but I still have the fire inside me. I still feel fresh."
Williams was also asked about the potential for a third stint in the NRL, with the two-time Premiership winner open to another return to the 13-man code.
"I'm not sure if league is in my future at 33," he said. "If there are offers, I will examine it with my family and go from there."
