Sam Cane lambasts former flatmate Brodie Retallick's cooking as 'a shambles' after duo named Chiefs co-captains

January 29, 2019

Chiefs fans will be hoping Retallick leads better than he cooks, judging by these cheeky comments from his fellow forward.

The Chiefs have announced today that Brodie Retallick and Sam Cane will co-captain the team for this year’s upcoming 2019 Super Rugby season.

Retallick and Cane were flatmates in 2012 and were part of the Chiefs teams that won Super Rugby titles in 2012 and 2013.

Cane revealed today during a media session that earlier in Retallick's rugby career, he lacked leadership skills.

"Although he was bigger [2012] that was when I was taking him under my wing, it made sense that it should've been him," said Cane.

"He couldn't cook, it was a shambles aye but we got there."

Retallick says he hopes to bring the best out of his teammates by leading with his actions on the field.

"I guess you have got to lead by example so that people can follow you," said Retallick.

"You know I'm going to go out there and play footy the way I do and hopefully the boys play for us.

"Be able to ask the hard questions when need be, but at the same time be a good guy and be a great teammate to be around."

Cane is set to meet up with a specialist in April and could return to Super Rugby action for the Chiefs in late May - early June.

The 26-year-old suffered a neck fracture in the All Blacks' win over the Springboks in the Rugby Championship in October last year.

The Chiefs take on the Highlanders at FMG Stadium in Hamilton on February 15 in the first round of the Super Rugby competition.
