Sky Sport rugby presenter and commentator Scotty 'Sumo' Stevenson will leave his current role, joining TVNZ in the new year.

A popular broadcaster, Stevenson's new position will be a joint role with TVNZ and Spark, leading  coverage of Rugby World Cup 2019 from Japan .

Stevenson has had audiences enthralled during his time with Sky, with his roles ranging from commentator, writer and also the editor of the Sky Sport Magazine.

His humourous commentary style has made him a fan favourite among rugby viewers both in New Zealand and abroad, having been a feature with Sky since 2007.

Spark's head of sport Jeff Latch spoke of his delight at acquiring Stevenson's services.

"It's great to have an experienced presenter and commentator of Scotty's calibre on the team. We'll announce more details in due course - but you can be sure that we'll make good use of Scotty's varied talents," Latch said in a statement.

"Kiwis are passionate about a well-presented game of rugby - and we're really confident that the addition of Scotty to the team will set up the coverage of the Rugby World Cup on Spark Sport and TVNZ to be a classic."
