Rieko Ioane backing 'best in the comp' Ma'a Nonu for All Blacks return

If the All Blacks' World Cup squad were to be selected any time soon, Blues star Ma'a Nonu would find himself included, according to Super Rugby teammate Rieko Ioane.

Nonu, 36, has defied his age for the Blues this season, playing a starring role in midfield as the Blues recorded four straight wins for the first time since 2011.

Naturally, with the Rugby World Cup approaching, speculation has swirled around as to whether or not Nonu will make a fairytale comeback for the All Blacks, the veteran of 103 Tests potentially able to seal a third straight Webb Ellis Cup.

Speaking to RNZ, 22-year old Ioane proclaimed that Nonu would be unlucky to miss out on an All Blacks return, putting his hand up as Super Rugby's in-form centre.

"If the team was picked today, based on form, he'd be in there," Ioane said.

"He just brings so much experience, and different skill-sets than what we're used to. His game would only lift being in that black jersey.

"He's playing outstanding footy at the moment and his combination with TJ [Faiane] has been probably the best in the comp for midfield pairings so far."

Despite his form for the Blues though, Nonu wasn't included in the 41-strong squad named for the All Blacks' foundation day earlier this week.
