'Real leadership' shown from Crusaders as rugby team weighs up whether to change its name, Jacinda Ardern says

There has been pressure for the team to change their name after the Christchurch terrorist attack.

"Real leadership" has been shown by the Crusaders during its name change debate, the Prime Minister said today.

Following the March 15 Christchurch terrorist attack concerns had been raised over the name's link with the Crusades in Medieval times carried out by Christians against Muslims.

Ms Ardern said she had been observing the debate and "would like to leave it to them, their club, their fan base, as they have this discussion rather than sharing my view".

"What I think is most important there is real leadership coming from within the Crusaders themselves."

Ms Ardern said she applauded them "for the fact they've been willing to have the discussion".

"Ultimately this should sit with the team, management and the fans, but I am glad they are having the discussion."

Today media asked Ms Ardern if she had a view on the issue but she said, "not one I'm going to share".

Earlier this month NZ Rugby boss Steve Tew said the organisation is considering a name change for the team.

"We are asking Research First to look into two possible options moving forward - retaining the 'Crusaders' name but changing the branding and associated imagery; or undertaking a complete rebranding, including the name and all imagery," Tew said.

"Maintaining the status quo in terms of the Crusaders name along with the current imagery of knights on horseback is, in our view, no longer tenable."

The team have stopped using horses and horsemen, and any changes would be introduced next season.
