NZR reject idea of ditching 'critical partner' SANZAAR

July 9, 2020

Talk has grown louder of a split between the Southern Hemisphere nations.

New Zealand Rugby boss Mark Robinson has quashed talk of a split between the southern hemisphere's major players, following talk of a split.

According to a report by Newshub earlier this week, New Zealand Rugby have seen a proposal for a Super Rugby restructure. The new-look competition would involve the five Kiwi sides, Australian outfits and a Pacific team compete in a new-look Super Rugby.

The four current South African sides and Argentina's Jaguares would not be involved, in a move that would surely be the beginning of the end for SANZAAR as we know it.

That report comes after claims earlier this year that South Africa are preparing to leave SANZAAR and the Rugby Championship , with a move to the more financially and logistically viable Six Nations.

Speaking to media via Zoom today, Robinson says NZR is still committed to SANZAAR.

"From our point of view, SANZAAR remains a critical strategic partner," Robinson said.

"We're committed to the joint venture partnership.

"Like everyone and all things, Covid's had a massive impact on rugby, and therefore there are ongoing discussions with SANZAAR and all our partners around what the shape of that might look like in the future.

"As recently as Tuesday, we were re-confirming our commitment to that partnership going forward, noting issues that the world is changing obviously."
