NZ Rugby Awards dominance shows women's game on the rise, says Sevens captain

December 14, 2018

Sarah Goss was thankful after her side took out team of the year.

The success of both the Black Ferns and Black Ferns Sevens at last night's New Zealand Rugby awards show the strength of the women's game, according to Sevens captain Sarah Goss.

With the best in New Zealand Rugby recognised in Auckland last night, the women's sides were well represented in the winners' circle, with Black Ferns halfback Kendra Cocksedge named as Player of the Year, while the Black Ferns Sevens took home the Team of the Year prize.

The win comes after last year's effort from the Black Ferns, who beat out the All Blacks for the 2017 Team of the Year.

Speaking to media, Goss said that the success spoke volumes about the health of women's rugby in New Zealand.

"It's been amazing," Goss began.

"New Zealand Rugby have embraced that, the New Zealand public have embraced it a lot.

"We do it because we love rugby and we're really passionate about growing sport in New Zealand. To get these awards, it just shows young girls that it's possible.

"If you put your mind to it, and if you work really hard, then you're going to be successful."
