'No one in sport does that' – Steve Hansen's incredible legacy remembered by NZR boss

December 14, 2018

Steve Tew says Hansen is one of the best coaches rugby will ever see.

New Zealand Rugby boss Steve Tew has delved into departing coach Steve Hansen's incredible record with the All Blacks, having announced he'll leave his post after next year's World Cup.

Hansen, 59, has been involved with the All Blacks coaching set-up since 2004, initially serving as an assistant to Sir Graham Henry, before ascending to the position of head coach in 2012.

As coach of the All Blacks, Hansen's record is second to none, winning 84 of 95 Tests including the 2015 Rugby World Cup with three draws, a success rate of 88.42 per cent. Hansen's predecessor Sir Graham Henry boasts a winning rate of just 85.4 per cent.

Speaking to media in Auckland today, Tew spoke gratefully about Hansen's near perfect record in charge of the All Blacks.

"We all struggle in comparisons with eras, but there's no doubt the period Steve's been involved in (is) a very successful period," he began.

"The thing that Steve can be most proud of, is the special thing that makes the All Blacks different has just grown, it's deeper, it's more authentic.

"This group carry themselves outstandingly well, and that's all part of Steve's leadership.

"What will be remembered is two World Cups to date, 16 Bledisloe Cups, I can't remember how many Investec Rugby Championships, and a winning rate of nearly 90 per cent.

"No one in sport does that, it's a phenomenal record."
