The Hurricanes have named their side to face the downtrodden Chiefs this weekend, with a number of changes from the team that defeated the Highlanders last week.

Wes Goosen is awarded a rare start on the right wing, with 2018's top try scorer Ben Lam given a week's rest, while Ngani Laumape starts at second-five in what will be his 50th match for the Hurricanes.

Vaea Fifita shifts from the loose forward trio into the second row, with Reed Prinsep taking his place in the number six jersey.

Prop Toby Smith will make his first appearance of 2019, while Ben May starts having been a substitute last week.

On the bench, the duo Heiden Bedwell-Curtis and Salesi Rayasi have both been named ahead of potential Hurricanes debuts. Bedwell-Curtis, 27, could notch his first appearance for his new side, having made 20 appearances for the Crusaders, having spent two seasons in Canterbury.

Meanwhile 22-year old winger Rayasi is in line for his first taste of Super Rugby altogether, having impressed in the Mitre 10 Cup with Auckland last season, scoring seven tries.

The Hurricanes face the Chiefs at Hamilton's FMG Stadium on Friday.
