Ngāti Porou East Coast end 54-game losing streak with All Black influence

October 16, 2021

Ma'a Nonu and Hosea Gear came off the bench for Ngati Porou East Coast against Buller, but could thank the starters for building an unassailable lead.

Not many would be surprised that Ngāti Porou East Coast finally ended their eight-year, 54-game losing streak on Saturday when they had a bench featuring former All Blacks Ma'a Nonu and Hosea Gear.

But the reality was, they didn't even need them.

The Ruatoria rugby side put together the kind of performance no one has seen in almost a decade, flying out to a 43-12 lead before Nonu even got his first touch.

The 39-year-old pulled off a 50-22m to set up their seventh try and Te Rangi Fraser's second of the afternoon.

The final score was 50-26, the losing streak finally over. Now, why not start a winning one?

Rumour has it Nonu is keen to give it a crack.
