The Kiwis' unbeaten record of 37 consecutive matches was broken on the first day of the Women's Sevens Series in London yesterday against Spain, 19-15.
But the result didn't hinder the New Zealand's side to qualify for Rio as they defeated France in the last match of the day 24-0.
New Zealand's captain Sarah Goss said qualifying was a dream come true.
"We've been focusing on this for the last three and a half years and for it to be a reality now is amazing," said Goss.
"I'm just really proud of the girls, as they've put in a lot of hard work, especially in the last six months," she said.
New Zealand will take on the hosts England tonight in the final eight.
