'My heart sunk' – Proud Cantabrian Aaron Mauger reflects on Christchurch attacks

March 18, 2019

The Highlanders coach played for Linwood Rugby Club, and has spoken about Friday's horrifying events.

Highlanders coach Aaron Mauger opened up about the effects of Friday's Christchurch terror attacks, with the shootings at two mosques hitting close to home for the Canterbury native.

After Friday's attacks left 50 dead, and dozens more injured as a gunman opened fire on two separate mosques, the Highlanders' Super Rugby clash with the Crusaders was called off, as the Christchurch side headed home to be with loved ones.

Speaking to media today though, Mauger revealed the toll that the events have taken on him, having represented Linwood Rugby Club, in immediate proximity of one of the mosques that was attacked.

"When we first heard the news, my heart sunk for the Muslim community, and for New Zealand, and the world really," Mauger said.

"It's been a lot to digest over the past couple of days really.

"It's just something that you don't imagine happening in New Zealand."

Mauger's Highlanders will return to action after the unplanned week off, taking on the Blues at Eden Park in Super Rugby.
