Malakai Fekitoa to link up with old Highlanders teammate Lima Sopoaga in English rugby - report

January 16, 2019
Malakai Fekitoa and Lima Sopoaga celebrate after the Highlanders' 23-22 win over the British and Irish Lions.

Former All Black Malakai Fekitoa is reportedly set to depart the French rugby scene and cross the English channel to join up with former Highlanders teammate Lima Sopoaga to join Premiership Rugby club Wasps.

The Times reports Fekitoa's move to the struggling English club is expected to be announced "in the next few days".

The signing would be a big boost for Wasps, who have endured a tough season with six wins and six losses to currently sit sixth on the ladder.

Fekitoa surprised many in 2017 when he announced his departure from Top 14 club Toulon shortly after playing the last of his 24 All Blacks Tests against the touring British and Irish Lions.

Fekitoa's salary at Toulon is reportedly $700,000 a season but things haven't gone to plan for the club who sits 11th in the Top 14 on five wins and nine losses, despite Kiwi talents such as Fekitoa, Julian Savea and Liam Messam at their disposal.

Should Fekitoa sign with Wasps he will still be surrounded by Kiwi talent, teaming up with old Highlanders teammate Sopoaga in the backline.

He'll also have ex-Kiwi turned England back rower Brad Shields at the club.
