'Mad collectors' come together to celebrate historic collections of NZ rugby memorabilia

May 21, 2018

The jamboree was organised by the NZ Rugby Museum to allow collectors around the country to put their private collections on display.

Hoarding and collecting - it's safe to say it often divides opinion - but not at an event like the one in Palmerston North over the weekend.

The jamboree, organised by the New Zealand Rugby Museum, gave jersey collectors around the country a chance to put some of their private collections on public display.

One collector happy to be part of the occasion was former All Black Grahame Thorne.

"I'm just a mad collector and have been all my life, like a squirrel," he said.

"And to see some of the things that are here, they're just fantastic."

Fellow collector Paul Robilliard said it’s almost like an addiction.

"The more you get the more you want. I've just got a little collection, compared to other collectors in New Zealand. But yeah, I love it."

From blue to black, there's plenty of jerseys here to keep both the avid collector and rugby fan entertained.

But there was one jersey in particular that's got people like textiles and jersey expert Tina Downes very excited.

"I think we've found something that will cause a bit of a stir in the rugby scene," she said

This jersey was innocuously pulled from a collector's duffel bag as organisers set up the event.

It's thought to be a match-worn jersey for New Zealand University, pre-dating World War 1 - but apart from that, it's a bit of a guessing game.

"We've had a good look at it, and it's made virtually identical to the 1905 original jersey, but in a fabric like the 1924 jerseys," she said.

"It's great to see something now that's not been recorded."

Now it's the hard task piecing together any information they can find, to try and place this latest jersey into the rich rugby history of New Zealand.
