Highlanders come from behind to edge Chiefs after late controversial red card

The Highlanders have come from behind to secure a great win over the home team. Down a man in the final 13 minutes of the match the Highlanders clawed their way to victory after a late try by Aaron Smith.

TRY! The Highlanders choose to go for a scrum with a very easy kickable penalty at goal. Aaron Smith passes the ball to Rob Thompson who makes a clever run and is tackled just centimetres short of the try-line. Aaron Smith has his hands on the ball and he dots over to score a crucial try for the visitors.

Josh Ioane is on target with his conversion attempt and the Highlanders have hit the front.

TRY! Etene Nanai-Seturo is in for his second try of the match. Orbyn Leger sees the space out wide and puts in a great left foot cross-field kick with Nanai-Seturo making an easy catch and he runs into score untouched over the try-line.

Brad Weber shanks his conversion attempt from out wide.

Highlanders' Aaron Smith comes in to replace Kayne Hammington at halfback and Nepo Laulala replaces Angus Ta'avao for the Chiefs in the front row.

It was all the Highlanders in the first 10 minutes, before the Chiefs found some momentum and managed to string some positive plays together. A controversial start to the game with the Highlanders denied a try two minutes into the game with the TMO ruling Highlanders hooker Liam Coltman held up in the in-goal.

The Highlanders went onto score through lock Pari Pari Parkinson in the 14th minute. But from there on it was all the Chiefs who ran in three tries in the first half.

Josh Ioane had the last say for the visitors with a converted penalty kick before the break.

It began with a basketball pass from Mitchael Allardice to Anton Lienert-Brown, he makes a half break before passing the ball to Nathan Harris who pops a pin-point ball for Etene Nanai-Seturo to run in to score.

Brad Weber nails his shot at goal from close range.

MISS! Shaun Stevenson steps up and he misses his penalty kick attempt from over 40m out on the angle.

TRY! Anton Lienert-Brown starts a great passage of play for the Chiefs which starts inside his own half. He fakes to kick and then offloads the ball to his teammate Bailyn Sullivan who kicks the ball ahead and regathers. 

He is tackled 5m out from the try-line, Linert-Brown gets his hands on the ball and delivers a short ball for Angus Ta'avao who goes into score the Chiefs's second try of the match.

Brad Weber nails his second attempt at goal and the Chiefs lead 12-7.

TRY! Kayne Hammington has two of his box kicks charged down by the Chiefs. The Highlanders are in real trouble with Matt Faddes forced to bobble the ball over the dead ball line.

The Chiefs have an attacking scrum and Tyler Ardron powers over to score, a huge defensive mistake by the Highlanders and the Chiefs are in for their first try of the match.

Brad Weber hit the left uprights from out wide and the Chiefs trail 7-5 against the Highlanders.

TRY! The Highlanders turn down a shot at goal after the Chiefs are penalised for an infringement in the breakdown. Kayne Hammington goes for quick tap in go from 15m out.

Liam Coltman gets close but his teammate and lock Pari Pari Parkinson gets it done, crashing over to score the first try of the match.

Josh Ioane adds the extras from close range.

DEFENCE!  Pari Pari Parkinson is hit with a big tackle and he loses the ball forward. Good defence from the home team to hold out the visitors. The Chiefs have a scrum 15m out from their own goal-line in the middle of the field.

NO TRY! A great passage of play from the Highlanders. Liam Coltman crashes over with Chiefs' players Brad Weber and Shaun Stevenson making a last ditch tackle to stop the Highlanders hooker. Appears as though Coltman has gone over and grounded the ball, but the TMO rules no try.

It was Thomas Umaga-Jensen who made the initial break at the 22m line after a running an excellent line off Josh Ioane before offloading the ball to Coltman.

7.13pm:   INJURY REPLACEMENT! Atu Moli has been ruled out of the match with an elbow injury which means Aidan Ross moves into the number one jersey as the starting loosehead prop for the Chiefs.

Tevita Mafileo moves onto the bench as front row cover, another player in the Chiefs side making his Super Rugby debut tonight.

PREVIEW:

Both the Chiefs and Highlanders will be starting rookie first-fives for tonight's clash, with former Blues midfielder Orbyn Leger given duties by Chiefs coach Collin Cooper to steer the team around the park in the No.10 jersey.

Veteran Stephen Donald returns for the Chiefs, named on the bench. He was called into the team after injuries to Tiaan Falcon, Marty McKenzie and Jack Debreczeni.

Josh Ioane has been given the nod to start for the Highlanders at first-five eighth.

Aaron Smith has been named as the back up halfback, with Kayne Hammington getting the go ahead to start for the Highlanders.

Centre Tumua Manu and winger Etene Nanai-Setruo are set to make their debuts for the Chiefs tonight.

The Chiefs have the wood over their rivals, having beaten the Highlanders in their last three match ups.
