September 6, 2018

Relive 1 NEWS NOW's live updates of tonight's Mitre 10 Cup match between Canterbury and Manawatū at Christchurch Stadium in Christchurch.

FT: CAN 34-23 MAN

The final whistle blows and that does it for tonight's clash in Christchurch. Clinical second half from Canterbury as they found their holes to attack through and converted. Tough loss for the Turbos who were right in this for 50min but came undone - especially at the lineout. That does it for us tonight folks. Pō mārie!

78min: CAN 34-23 MAN

MAN TRY! Turbos strike with Mafi! A great run from the midfielder sees him slice through Canterbury's line and streak away to score from 50m out. Great try but it may be too little, too late.

76min: CAN 34-16 MAN

Turbos with one last attacking chance here as they earn a penalty. They kick for touch and get a lineout 10m inside Canterbury's half.

73min: CAN 34-16 MAN

Canterbury continue to chew up the clock with ball in hand but it falters after the ball dies in a ruck and can't get out. Turbos scrum just outside their 22m.

71min: CAN 34-16 MAN

Smart play from Canterbury here as they chew up the clock. They work a turnover on halfway after another stale passage of attack from the Turbos and immediately kick for the corner. Turbos get back to recover it but the clearing kick isn't great. Canterbury lineout just outside the Turbos' 22m.

68min: CAN 34-16 MAN

CAN TRY! Canterbury take the penalty quickly and go right. There metres from the line and come back to the left with Romano and the All Black barges his way over to score. What an impact!

66min: CAN 27-16 MAN

Long passage of play as neither side particularly want to hand over possession. But after 12 phases of going nowhere, Turbos finally clear from their half and Canterbury run it back. They catch the Turbos napping with a chip over the top and Bridge recovers it to get tackled 5m from the line. Turbos swarm the ruck from offside positions and get penalised.

62min: CAN 27-16 MAN

Turbos literally throw their chance away as the pass to the blindside from the scrum goes into touch. Canterbury lineout 10m from their line.

60min: CAN 27-16 MAN

Turbos work the ball for 10 phases but nothing from it before Canterbury are penalised for being offside. Turbos choose the scrum instead of a lineout. It'll be 5m from Canterbury's line.

58min: CAN 27-16 MAN

Turbos turn to put some pressure on as Canterbury cough the ball up 10m from their line. Turbos scrum coming up and they need to convert here to get back in the contest.

56min: CAN 27-16 MAN

CAN TRY! Individual brilliance from Cameron! Gets the ball on halfway and puts his foot down. Parts the Turbos defence like the Red Sea and bolts into the backfield. No one can touch him and he's in under the posts.

53min: CAN 20-16 MAN

CAN THREE!  Canterbury immediately strike back after the Turbos botch the restart. The kickoff bounces and the Turbos dive on the loose ball inside their 22m. They try to run it out but Canterbury swarm the ruck and the Turbos are penalised for incorrectly joining the breakdown. Cameron steps up for the three on offer and slots it.

51min: CAN 17-16 MAN

MAN THREE!  Turbos get the ball back after Canterbury clear and immediately launch another attack. They're 20m out and Canterbury are penalised for not rolling away. Turbos take the free three on offer and cut the deficit to one point.

48min: CAN 17-13 MAN

A wild passage of play ends with a 5m scrum to Canterbury in their half. Thompson gets a charge down on halfway that the Turbos recover and recycle to the left wing. There's space but Bridge gets across to stop the try. The Turbos try another run but they get held up again! Canterbury earn the scrum for the defensive effort.

45min: CAN 17-13 MAN

CAN TRY! It takes 19 phases but Canterbury finally find the tryline and Makene dives over untouched. Canterbury pick and go to within inches of the chalk before firing it down the backline. There's numbers on right and Makene gets it with no one in front of him. 10m run and he's in. Canterbury back in front.

40min: CAN 12-13 MAN

Canterbury get things going for the second half and their off to a blinder as the Turbos drop it cold. Canterbury scrum on the Turbos' 22m.

HT: CAN 12-13 MAN

First 40 in the books and what a half from the Turbos. Constantly putting the defending champs under the pump and making this a battle of forward packs. Canterbury haven't had an answer yet and have been pinned in their half as a result. They'll need to either muscle up or find some openings if they want to change things on the paddock and the scoreboard. Don't go anywhere. We'll be back soon with the second half.

37min: CAN 12-13 MAN

Turbos set up another attack after Canterbury clears. They use the forwards again for eight phases but it comes undone when Alaalatoa gets held up in the tackle. Can't go to ground so it's a Canterbury scrum 15m from their line.

34min: CAN 12-13 MAN

Great passage of play from the Turbos after Canterbury throw the ball away at the lineout. Run it all the way down to Canterbury's 22m and look to go wide. Tagicakibau is one on one with McKay 10m out but he's bundled into touch with the tackle. Great defence but Canterbury under a lot of pressure here.

31min: CAN 12-13 MAN

Manawatu go for a cross kick after the scrum but it's a shocker and Bridge gets it with ease. Comes back to halfway and the Turbos swamp the breakdown but there's a man off his feet and they're penalised. Canterbury use the penalty to kick for touch and it's a lineout 10m from the Turbos' line.

29min: CAN 12-13 MAN

Canterbury look to run the ball after the kick off but after 10 phases it comes undone with a knock on from Bridge. Turbos scrum 10m inside their half.

27min: CAN 12-13 MAN

CAN TRY! Pleasants-Tate gets paid back for the earlier offload as he goes in to score. Rinse and repeat for Canterbury who set up another maul from the lineout and go over the chalk again. Cameron can't convert from the right so the Turbos still in the lead.

25min: CAN 7-13 MAN

Canterbury right back on the attack after a great offload from Pleasants-Tate gets his team inside the Turbos' 22m. Canterbury throw their bodies at the line with pick and gos and earn a penalty for their efforts. Once again, the hosts turn down the three and kick for touch. Canterbury lineout 5m from the Turbos' line.

23min: CAN 7-13 MAN

MAN TRY! The Turbos take the lead off a superb run from Thompson. The Highlanders midfielder busts through four defenders to put the Turbos within metres of Canterbury's line. A couple of pick and gos and Mitchell is in on the base of the posts. What a start from the visitors.

20min: CAN 7-6 MAN

Canterbury are penalised again! This time it's for not releasing at the ruck after they got the ball back from the kick off. Turbos kick for touch and again they'll set up shop 30m from Canterbury's line with the lineout.

18min: CAN 7-6 MAN

MAN THREE! Canterbury earn a scrum after the Turbos cough the ball up at the lineout but their scrum collapses and gives away a penalty. Malcolm steps up and slots another one from practically the same spot.

15min: CAN 7-3 MAN

Turbos get good attacking position with a penalty after Canterbury don't roll away at the ruck. The kick for touch gives them a lineout on Canterbury's 22m. Ref has also had a quick word to the skippers after the second scuffle already and he's warned any more silly stuff will be a yellow.

14min: CAN 7-3 MAN

Canterbury are immediately back on the front foot after the Turbos are penalised shortly after the kick off for an illegal cleanout. Canterbury kick for touch and get a lineout on the Turbos' 22m. But it all goes to waste as there's a knock on at the lineout. Turbos scrum.

12min: CAN 7-3 MAN

MAN THREE! Canterbury give away another penalty for not rolling away and the Turbos opt for a shot at goal. Malcolm steps up from 25m out on the right side of the field and slots it. Nice response from the visitors but it'll take more than goals to beat the defending champs.

10min: CAN 7-0 MAN

Turbos get their first attacking chance after Canterbury are penalised at the lineout for taking the catcher out in the air. They kick for touch and get a lineout 10m inside Canterbury's half.

8min: CAN 7-0 MAN

CAN TRY! As easy as you like. Canterbury sets the maul and drives over the line. Prinsep gets credited with the try. Strong start from the hosts.

5min: CAN 0-0 MAN

Canterbury break into the Turbos' 22m with a superb offload in the midfield from Cameron. From there, they work the ball for 19 phases with the forwards and finally the Turbos are penalised for offside. Canterbury smell blood though and kick for touch. 5m lineout coming up.

2min: CAN 0-0 MAN

Rowdy start. Canterbury misread the kickoff and knock on the catch. Turbos get the scrum and Canterbury put a big shove on and earn the penalty. That leads to a scuffle that the ref finally breaks up. Canterbury kick for touch with the penalty and get a lineout on halfway.

Canterbury will be aiming to stay in the upper tier of the Premiership with tonight's clash against Championship side Manawatū, but as Waikato proved last night and recent results between the two sides show, nothing can be taken for granted.

Canterbury have rebounded from their opening round loss to Tasman to secure big wins over Wellington and Bay of Plenty in the last two weeks.

The defending champions' form is a stark contrast from that of the Turbos who started with flair in a win over Waikato before being handed heavy losses to Taranaki and Otago.

As a result, the visitors have rung the changes for tonight's contest.

Te Rangatira Waitokia slots onto the right wing, while five-Test Fijian Michael Tagicakibau will debut for the Turbos on the left wing.

Sam Malcolm takes over at No.10 after Jade Te Rure dislocated his elbow against Otago. Sean Paranihi also comes into the loosehead prop position at the expense of Fraser Armstrong.

Canterbury have also made adjustments for tonight's match with co-captain Mitch Drummond moving to the bench.

All Black Luke Romano also heads to the pine for the home side while Ngane Punivai and Phil Burleigh will test their new combination in the midfield.

The last time the two sides met Manawatū stunned Canterbury with a 19-13 win in 2016. Outside the result, history favours the home side with Canterbury winning 28 of their 40 encounters since 1896.

Manawatū have won 10 matches with two results ending in a draw.
