Liam Squire out for eight to 10 weeks, Highlanders coach confirms: 'He's had some poor luck'

March 18, 2019

Only just returning from a hip injury, Squire will now have another stint on the sidelines.

All Blacks and Highlanders flanker Liam Squire's run of injuries has continued, facing another eight to 10 weeks on the sideline with a knee injury, coach Aaron Mauger confirmed.

Squire, 27, is yet to feature in Super Rugby this year, having been ruled out with a hip injury, returning to training last week.

However, in an unfortunate twist, Squire has now suffered a torn medial ligament in his knee, out of action for the foreseeable future.

"Unfortunately, he's likely to be out for eight-10 weeks," Mauger told media.

"He would have been available this week. It's a terrible blow for him - a guy who's worked so hard to get back to where he is."

Mauger though, was philosophical about Squire's woes, saying that it's an unavoidable part of rugby.

"These things happen in rugby, and unfortunately it's happened to a guy who's already had a bit of adversity this year.

"It's just another issue we're dealing with making sure we put the right support around him.

"He's had some poor luck alright."

The Highlanders are next in action against the Blues in Super Rugby this Friday, while Squire could return for his side's round 13 clash with the Sunwolves in Dunedin.
