The impressively-bearded 29-year-old committed to the Highlanders until 2022, a welcome signature for southern fans given his strong form in a struggling side.

He said the reasons behind his decision weren’t complicated.

"Got a young family, my wife is from down here, two young kids, we just decided it’s best for us," he said.

"I love the Landers, I love playing for Otago, I love Dunedin, I love getting out hunting and fishing.

"Easy decision."

Coltman, originally from Taranaki, said he did consider other offers, but he now considered Dunedin home and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else at this stage of his career.

He enjoyed being involved in Steve Hansen’s so-called foundation day yesterday, but was focussed on this weekend’s Gordon Hunter Memorial Trophy clash with the Blues on Saturday.
