Karne Hesketh's girlfriend says he's still in shock after scoring an 84th minute try for Japan, which broke Springbok hearts.
The moment the New Zealand-born player performed a rugby miracle has sent Japanese fans into a frenzy and stunned the rugby world.
Hesketh's girlfriend, Black Fern and NZ Women's Sevens player Carla Hohepa, says he's extremely proud of the win.
"He didn't really say much, just had a massive grin on his face which I think says it all," she told ONE News from the United Kingdom.
She said she guessed her partner also felt "a little silly that he was getting so much media attention and he was only on there for two minutes".
The Brave Blossoms' replacement back came off the bench to make a cool first touch for his side during overtime, clinching a 34-32 victory.
It's 24 years since the team had their only other World Cup win, against Zimbabwe.
Japan features six New Zealand-born players.
The new World Cup darlings are now looking ahead to their next game against Scotland on Thursday.
