Kieran Read likely to leave NZ Rugby after 2019 RWC

November 3, 2018
Read will play his first Test of the year against Australia on Saturday.

All Blacks captain Kieran Read has all but confirmed he will leave New Zealand after next year's Rugby World Cup - although where he will go is to be decided.

Read told the New Zealand Herald he, his wife and their three young kids have always wanted to have an overseas experience together and the conclusion of the 2019 season is looking like a perfect time to do it.

"Yeah I have," he said when asked if he'd thought about what he will do after next year's World Cup.

"So for me I think it probably won't be in New Zealand. We have always thought as a family that we would like to go overseas and use that experience for the kids. That is probably the main option at the moment."

The pair had some well-earned downtime before today's captain's run.

At the conclusion of next year's tournament, Read will be 34 having played his third World Cup with at least two victories in 2011 and 2015.

He will have also played almost 50 Tests as an All Blacks captain, won Super Rugby championships with the Crusaders, been named World Player of the Year (2013) and played against the British and Irish Lions - leaving not much if anything to cross off in an illustrious New Zealand Rugby career.

However, Read admitted he's also contemplated retirement, saying there are "plenty of options" on the table.

Read first captained the All Blacks in 2012, doing so another eight times before he took over full time from Richie McCaw in 2016.
