Kieran Read embracing new 'enforcer-type' role for All Blacks but admits 'I'm not as fast as I used to be'

October 20, 2019

Read said he enjoys playing in different parts of the field as part of the All Blacks' dynamic loose forwards unit.

All Blacks captain Kieran Read has moulded his game to suit both himself and the game plans his team are trying to implement.

The 125-Test No.8 shifts to the side of the scrum for attacking plays, giving strong ball carrier Ardie Savea a chance to run off the back. He also spends his time in the middle of the field a lot more now than when he debuted in 2008.

When asked by media after last night's 46-14 win over Ireland in the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals what it was like to play as an "enforcer" these days, the skipper admitted it was tough work.

"I'm really enjoying getting to play in different parts of the field," Read said.

"We've got a loose forward group that just mixes and mingles and kind of goes wherever we're needed and if I get a chance in the middle, it's great.

"Although I'm maybe not as fast as I used to be."

Read also acts as a defensive anchor in the midfield where last night he finished with the second most tackles by an All Black - 14.

"It felt like we had to make a lot of tackles [in the first half]," Read said.

"So I'm pretty sore."

Read and the All Blacks now have a week to mend their aching bodies for a semi-final clash with England.
