Jordie Barrett confident shoulder has healed after test-run against Hurricanes’ hard-hitters

July 3, 2020

Barrett joked he had to test his shoulder against Ben May and Dane Coles during training this week.

If there were any doubts about whether Jordie Barrett's recently-healed shoulder could endure the intensity of a Kiwi Super Rugby derby, they were put to rest on Wednesday.

"I had Ben May coming down one channel and Colesy [Dane Coles] coming down the next channel at training two days ago, so that's a pass mark I think," a smiling Barrett told media this afternoon.

Barrett has missed the opening three rounds of the Super Rugby Aotearoa competition after sustaining a bizarre shoulder injury at training before their first match against the Blues last month.

"I hurt my shoulder tackling a tackle bag," Barrett said.

"My arm extended above my head so I had basically dislocated it and popped a ligament by the armpit so it was a bit of a weird one."

Barrett told media this afternoon surgery was weighed up as an option but he opted to go down the rehabilitation path instead.

"It's been just over a month. There's an element of risk to it but I feel like I've done plenty of work and I'm confident with it."

Barrett is set to play in his first Super Rugby Aotearoa match this weekend when the Hurricanes take on fellow strugglers the Chiefs in Hamilton, with both sides looking for their first win in the competition.

Barrett is confident his team will turn up when it counts, though.

"I feel like our group is in a pretty good spot at the moment and we're not far off."
