November 27, 2018

New Zealander and Ireland coach Schmidt will retire from coaching after next year's World Cup.

Crusaders coach Scott Robertson has sympathised with Ireland coach Joe Schmidt's decision to leave his post after the 2019 World Cup, having made the shock announcement overnight.

Schmidt, 53 was among the front runners to replace Hansen once he leaves his role with the All Blacks, only to announce he'll retire from coaching altogether after next year's World Cup in Japan .

Asked about Schmidt's decision in Christchurch today, Robertson said he understood the reasons behind the Kiwi coach's surprise move.

"Joe's done an extremely incredible job with the Irish crew," Robertson began.

"He's a great coach, and obviously he's made a family decision.

"He might just need a year or two before he fills the tank again, but I know international rugby does take its toll.

"It's rare that you go out on your own terms, and he's gone out on his own terms this time. Good on him.

"It's a big call and he's done the right thing for him and his family."
