The 28-year-old says he is enjoying is footy in New Zealand and didn't think it was the right time in his career to leave for overseas.

"I just kind of felt like I've worked too hard to get that opportunity in the midfield here in New Zealand to kind of walk away from it."

Crotty, capped 27 times, missed selection for the 2015 World Cup but has been a favourite with Steve Hansen since, fitness permitting.

The centre is set to return to action this weekend for the Crusaders' South Island derby with the Highlanders in their Super Rugby quarter-final.

The centre says the overseas interest made his decision to stay in New Zealand the "toughest yet".
