'It's a worry' – Hurricanes CEO concerned by NZ rugby's European exodus

January 30, 2018

Kiwi players and coaches have become luxuries for overseas clubs.

New Zealand's drain of players and coaches should worry the game's power brokers, says Hurricanes CEO Avan Lee.

With Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd just the latest big name to leave New Zealand for the Northern Hemisphere, Lee says that the trend of high profile exits could have dire consequences for rugby in this country.

"It's a worry that these Northern Hemisphere clubs and Japan and France and so forth can take a lot of our talent," he told 1 NEWS.

"It's not just players, it's coaches as well."

"That's something we need to be wary of, and we need to work closely with the New Zealand Rugby Union and the clubs in New Zealand to retain our best talent."

Boyd joins the likes of Dave Rennie, Todd Blackadder, Wayne Pivac and many others to have left New Zealand for coaching jobs overseas in recent times.
