'It's the right call' – Steve Hansen happy with decision to leave All Blacks

December 14, 2018

Hansen says he’d want to stay on, but will leave for the good of the team.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen says he's comfortable with his decision to step down after next year's World Cup, although he'd happily continue in his current role.

Hansen, 59, today revealed his plans for the future, saying he'll leave the All Blacks after next year's World Cup in Japan.

Speaking to media though, Hansen made it clear that he'd be more than willing to stay with the All Blacks, only stepping down because he feels like it's time for new ideas going forward.

"I'd like to coach this team for the rest of my living days, but that's not the right thing to do," he began.

"I wouldn't say it's a close call, it's just the right call.

"My responsibility is the team and my family, that's where I've got to the conclusion.

"At the end of the day it's my job to make the right decisions for the team, myself, and my family."
