'It's nice to have multiple choices' – Steve Hansen stays coy on All Blacks' third halfback

June 3, 2019

The All Blacks' coach says there are a number of candidates playing well.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen is giving nothing away about who he sees as his third choice halfback, heading into this year's Rugby Championship and Rugby World Cup.

With the likes of Chiefs duo Brad Weber and Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi and Crusaders' Mitchell Drummond all putting their hands up to play support roles for Aaron Smith and TJ Perenara, coach Hansen was asked today as to who stands where in his halfback pecking order.

Asked about Weber in particular, Hansen was complimentary of the Chiefs' number nine, saying:

"Brad's getting mentioned all the time," Hansen began.

"He's obviously playing well and leading well. Coops [Chiefs coach Colin Cooper] is very happy with the way he's leading.

"He's putting himself in the frame."

However, Hansen refused to comment on who the current standout candidate in his mind is at the moment.

"There was a number of halfbacks that played particularly well last week - and three of them played in one game.

"We can only pick three, or maybe two, depending on what we come down to for the world cup. But it's nice to have multiple choices."
