'I'm still bleeding' - Ireland coach Joe Schmidt not over 2013 heartbreak

November 12, 2018
All Blacks replacement Ryan Crotty scampers over for the match-winning try against Ireland.

Ireland coach Joe Schmidt is still losing sleep over his side's 2013 loss to the All Blacks, having spurned the chance to defeat New Zealand in front of a home crowd.

During the 2013 clash in Dublin, Schmidt's Ireland led 22-7 over a shell-shocked All Blacks side, before surrendering a last minute try to Ryan Crotty, falling 24-22.

Speaking to media in preparation to face the All Blacks at the same venue this weekend though, Ireland's Kiwi coach Schmidt spoke of the heartbreak he still feels after that 2013 result.

"I'd be delighted if we can be as competitive as the last three times we've played them," Schmidt said.

"The fact that the points differential between us is so narrow ... the game in 2013, I'm still bleeding from that.

"It hurts when that happens."

However, Schmidt's side would claim a history-making victory over the All Blacks three years later, claiming a 40-29 win in Chicago in 2016.
