Despite not being able to beat the record time set by former charge Beauden Barrett, the Hurricanes are overall happy with their Bronco test results, says assistant coach Chris Gibbes.
In his return to the Blues' training at the start of last week, Beauden Barrett blew away the competition, the 28-year-old clocked a personal best in the pre-season "Bronco" test, setting the fastest time across the five New Zealand sides at four minutes and 12 seconds.
The Bronco test sees players run shuttles of 20, 40 and 60 metres as one set, repeated five times, the ideal being to clock in under five minutes.
There had been hope that Chiefs fullback Damian McKenzie could be the one to beat Barrett's time, however he too fell short.
While Barrett's younger brother Jordie was another contender to post New Zealand's best time, Beauden will be the one to carry the Bronco bragging rights into Super Rugby Aotearoa.
Speaking to media via Zoom, assistant coach Gibbes made it clear that the Hurricanes were content with their times, even if they couldn't top the table.
"We did really well," Gibbes said.
"The boys worked really hard, I think it's a credit to them the way that they've come back in.
Gibbes also singled out Jordie Barrett for praise, despite falling short of Beauden.
"You only had to look off the side after that Bronco, and Jordie took a little bit to recover.
"He'd emptied. That's all you can ask for. Whether it's a PB or whether he beats his brother is irrelevant.
"It's what he's doing and putting in, and a lot of the boys are the same.
"We're really pleased."
