Hurricanes hold off late Rebels comeback, scrape past Melbourne after lacklustre second half

TRY! The Rebels secure a crucial turover deep inside the Hurricanes' 22. Will Genia recognises the space out wide to the left and he and the backs spread the ball wide to Reece Hodge who is all alone.

Hurricanes winger Wes Goosen attempts a last ditch tackle but Hodge has no problems dotting down for his side's third try of the match.

Quade Cooper is unsuccessful with his conversion attempt from the sideline.

TRY! Will Genia takes the ball to the line just outside of the Hurricanes' 22 before passing the ball to a rampaging Pone Fa'amausili. The reserve flanker makes a 10m run before offloading the ball to Isi Naisarani who then links up with Billy Meakes. And Meakes is in for the Rebels' second try.

Quade Cooper is online with his conversion attempt. We have a game on our hands with just 15 minutes remaining.

NO TRY! The Rebels get close to scoring their second try of the match but they squander their chance. Quade Cooper throws a clever inside ball to Tom English who makes a half break. English attempts an offload to his midfield partner Reece Hodge and he can't hold onto the ball.

TRY! Finally the Rebels are in! Reece Hodge makes a charging run into the Hurricanes' 22 before being brought down by Ardie Savea. Rebels lock Matt Phillip charges onto a pass by Will Genia and powers through a massive hole in the Canes' defensive line before diving over to score close to the goal posts.

Quade Cooper converts the two-pointer with ease.

MISTAKE! The Hurricanes try a set play around halfway from a scrum, Canes midfielder Matt Proctor tries to throw it wide but he overcooks his pass and it goes into touch.

TRY! Vaea Fifita skips his way over to score the Hurricanes' fourth try of the match! The Melbourne Rebels have no answer for the Canes' attack. It all began with a rampaging run and break from hooker Asafo Aumua in the middle of the park. Aumua ran over the top of Will Genia just inside the Rebels' 40m line before throwing a wide bounce pass to Fifita.

Fifita has some support with him but he doesn't need it, he throws a dummy before dotting down close to the goal posts.

Beauden Barrett is on target with his conversion attempt.

TRY! Wes Goosen goes into to score down the right hand corner! An excellent team try by the Canes, the forwards keep it in close just outside the Rebels' 22 and grind it up field before unleashing their backs. Beauden Barrett throws a short ball to Ngani Laumape who then throws a backdoor pass to Jordie Barrett.

Jordie throws a long pass out to Goosen who has acres of space, he's too quick and he goes into score the Hurricanes' third try of the match.

Beauden Barrett's kick from the sideline looks to be curving back in but it hits the right hand goal post.

NO TRY! The Hurricanes go up and contest the line-out 5m from the Rebels' goal-line. Hurricanes prop Fraser Armstrong appears to regather the ball and is held up over the try-line. Replays show that Hurricanes lock Isaia Walker-Leawere had knocked the ball on while contesting for the ball.

TRY! A beautiful set play by the Hurricanes off the line-out just outside the Rebels' 22. Ardie Savea plays halfback and passes the ball to Richard Judd. He throws a backdoor pass to Jordie Barrett who then links up with his brother. Beauden Barrett is too quick and he goes into score a superb try from 30m out.

TRY! Ngani Laumape makes a charging run 40m out, the first Rebels defender can't get a hold of him and Laumape fends off Will Genia. He has two more defenders to beat and he powers his way all the way to the try-line. An excellent solo effort by Laumape!

MISS! Hurricanes prop Jeff Toomaga-Allen is penalised for not releasing a Melbourne Rebels player in a tackle. Rebels Reece Hodge steps up to attempt a kick from 51m out but his kick is off target.

PRE-MATCH:

The Hurricanes are coming off a dominant 47-19 win over the Chiefs last Saturday.

TJ Perenara is ruled out in today's clash due to an enforced All Blacks rest, he is replaced by Richard Judd in the No.9 jersey for the Hurricanes.

Jordie Barrett holds onto his position at fullback after an impressive performance last week against the Chiefs, where he scored a try double.

The combination of Quade Cooper and Will Genia has been instrumental for the Rebels, with the Melbourne side sitting at the top of the Australian conference ladder.

With Perenara out Beauden Barrrett has been given captaincy duties for the home side.

The Hurricanes are currently on the a three game winning streak.
