'He's a smart man' – Steve Hansen coy over future of Ireland's Joe Schmidt

November 12, 2018

The Kiwi coach is a strong contender to replace Hansen in charge of the All Blacks.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen didn't give too much away over the future of Ireland's Joe Schmidt, with the Kiwi considered a contender to take charge of New Zealand one day.

Alongside the likes of Crusaders coach Scott Robertson and All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster, Schmidt is a hot favourite to possibly replace Hansen after next year's World Cup in Japan, even earning a strong endorsement from Richie McCaw last week.

Speaking to media in Dublin this morning, though, Hansen was coy on the prospect of Schmidt's future.

"If I did have some advice for him, I wouldn't be telling him through the media," Hansen began.

"If he needs my advice, he'll ask me over a cold beer, a cup of coffee or something where we'll talk about it.

"He's a smart man, Joe. He'll do what's right for his family I'm sure, and make a decision around those things."

Hansen also spoke about the regard that Schmidt is held in back in New Zealand, having taken Ireland from number nine to number two in the world rankings, as well as a first ever victory over the All Blacks.

"He's obviously been very successful here, so people see him as successful."

Schmidt has said to Irish media that his future will be decided at the end of the current European season.
