'He's looking older each day' – Damian McKenzie hails return of Stephen Donald

February 19, 2019

The All Blacks' 2011 hero made his Chiefs comeback against the Highlanders last week.

Chiefs and All Blacks playmaker Damian McKenzie is relishing the return of Stephen Donald to Kiwi shores, having made his Super Rugby return against the Highlanders last weekend.

After a stint in Japan with the Toshiba Brave Lupus and the NEC Green Rockets, the now 35-year-old Donald has returned to the Chiefs, bringing over 100 games worth of experience for younger teammates like McKenzie to learn from.

Speaking to media today, McKenzie told of his delight at having the man affectionately known as "Beaver" back in the Chiefs' ranks.

"It's inspiring having Beav back, actually still running around," McKenzie began.

"Having his knowledge, especially in a backline where we're quite inexperienced, quite young, we've obviously got a lot of talent there, it's nice to have him back.

"He's looking older each day with that new haircut he's got. It's great to have that sort of leadership - we know what Beav's done.

"To have him around the environment, it's done a lot of good things for us over the last couple of weeks."

McKenzie will be in line for his first Super Rugby appearance of 2019 against the Brumbies, having sat out against the Highlanders with injury.
