'He's been a fantastic rugby player' - Steve Hansen gives Julian Savea his blessing ahead of Toulon move

June 17, 2018

Savea has been linked with a switch to the French club.

Steve Hansen has given Julian Savea's reported move to Toulon the green light, as the former All Blacks winger appears destined to leave New Zealand.

Savea, 27, has been reported to have agreed a two-year deal with the French club, ending his five-year stint in the black jersey.

Speaking to media in Wellington this morning, Hansen praised Savea for his time in New Zealand rugby.

"He's been a fantastic player, for not only the Hurricanes and Wellington, but for the All Blacks," he said.

"He's the second top try scorer of all time. He's caught the imagination of the world really.

"When he was at his best, he was unstoppable. He's done what a lot of people aspire to do, and that's wear the jersey with pride, and enhanced it.

"It's disappointing to see him going when he's still young, but that's the case with some players, they get to their peak early and then it's time to move on.

"He's done a great job, (we) wish him all the best, and hope it really goes well for him."

Savea will address media tomorrow over his playing future.
