As it happened: Chiefs score game-winning try in dying minutes to snatch victory from Jaguares

March 31, 2019

Relive 1 NEWS NOW's live updates of this morning's Super Rugby clash between the Jaguares and Chiefs at Jose Amalfitani Stadium in Buenos Aires.

FT: JAG 27-30 CHI

The Chiefs win a seesawing contest in Buenos Aires. They were being dominated for much of the second half but rose up when it counted. A brilliant away tour for the struggling Kiwi side, who now head back to NZ for a clash with the Blues. That's all from us in Buenos Aires. Have a great Sunday!

79min: JAG 27-30 CHI

CHI TRY! THE CHIEFS SNATCH THE LEAD BACK! It's a clean little set-piece at the scrum and the ball is run off the back and popped to Tahuirorangi who scores. McKenzie nails the kick from the sideline. Jaguares with one last shot but need a try now to win with that conversion.

77min: JAG 27-23 CHI

Chiefs are building pressure but can't break the Jaguares line. They try for a skip pass but Boffelli jumps in the air and manages to grab the ball! Jaguares look to kick for touch but it's charged down in their in-goal, meaning it's a Chiefs scrum 5m out. This one's going right down to the wire.

75min: JAG 27-23 CHI

Chiefs with an immediate chance to reply as the Jaguares are penalised shortly after kickoff for playing the ball on the ground. McKenzie kicks for touch and it's a lineout 5m out.

73min: JAG 27-23 CHI

JAG TRY! Out of nowhere, the Jaguares strike! They get a turnover near halfway and go about making metres with a composed attack. They get to within 10m before an advantage is given. With that in mind, it's another cross kick to the right corner and it's worked again! Jaguares back in front by four, seven minutes left.

69min: JAG 20-23 CHI

CHI THREE! Chiefs back in front and the Jaguares have only themselves to blame. Lienert-Brown pressures with a grubber kick and the Jaguares knock the ball on again trying to recover it. But then they play the ball on the ground so the knock on advantage is upgraded to a penalty and McKenzie slots it with ease. 11 minutes left. Chiefs by three.

67min: JAG 20-20 CHI

Chiefs kick for territory off the scrum and the Jaguares counter attack. But there's another knock on! Chiefs now with a scrum just inside the Jaguares half. It's all falling apart for the home side.

65min: JAG 20-20 CHI

Jaguares get the ball back after winning a high ball contest and attack down the right wing. They've got the numbers but the last past can't stick and it's a knock on! Chiefs scrum just outside their 22m.

63min: JAG 20-20 CHI

It gets even better for the Chiefs as they get a penalty in their own scrum! McKenzie clears and gets a lineout 10m from halfway.

62min: JAG 20-20 CHI

HUGE scrum from the Chiefs and there's a knock on by the Jaguares at the back of the scrum! Huge moment in the match and what a momentum killer! Chiefs now with a scrum 6m from their own line.

61min: JAG 20-20 CHI

JAG NO TRY! Jaguares rumble over the line but it's a mountain of bodies in there. Ref can't get a good sight of it so he heads upstairs to check and sure enough, it's held up. Chiefs survive the first wave but with the Jaguares getting a 5m scrum, they're not out of the woods yet.

60min: JAG 20-20 CHI

Chiefs have a chance to get back into the match with a lineout just outside the Jaguares 22m but its stolen and the Jaguares launch another attack. Jaguares go to a high kick and one of the chasers is taken out going for the ball. Manu was the culprit. Jaguares kick for touch and get a lineout 15m from the Chiefs line. If the Jaguares score here, Chiefs are in a world of trouble.

57min: JAG 20-20 CHI

JAG TRY! Chiefs defence can't set after a good run off the scrum and it's quickly recycled to the left for a try. The extras are good and we're all tied up! 23 minutes left.

55min: JAG 13-20 CHI

BIG moment for the Jaguares. Chiefs are crumbling from the pressure and the throw at the lineout isn't straight! That means a 10m scrum for the Jaguares as the home crowd finds its voice. Can the Chiefs hold out?

54min: JAG 13-20 CHI

Jaguares see some space off the scrum and kick the ball through. McKenzie has been caught out of position and it bounces into touch. Chiefs lineout 10m from their own tryline.

52min: JAG 13-20 CHI

Chiefs can't control the dropout and it's a knock on. Jaguares get another chance here with a scrum just inside their half.

51min: JAG 13-20 CHI

Kremer's night goes from bad to worse. Jaguares building another promising attack and the loosie coughs an easy pass up. Chiefs decide on territory instead of a counterattack and thump the ball downfield. It's just a bit overcooked though and will be a 22m dropout.

49min: JAG 13-20 CHI

Chiefs looking a bit rattled here. They look to attack on the left wing but a horrid pass goes well forward and it gives the Jaguares a scrum on halfway.

47min: JAG 13-20 CHI

JAG TRY! WHAT A TRY! Jaguares roar back to life with a superb cross-kick try. Damian McKenzie looks to have a track on it as it floats into the in-goal near the right touchline but Tuculet flies in from no where to secure and score. Taking that catch at the speed he was going is no easy feat. Home side back in the contest with the extras.

44min: JAG 6-20 CHI

First signs off life from the Jaguares as they make a break in the midfield with an offload. Chiefs stop the attack just outside their 22m but they're soon penalised for being offside. Jaguares get Kremer back from the bin and go for a lineout with their penalty. It's 5m from the Chiefs' line.

42min: JAG 6-20 CHI

CHI THREE! Chiefs take some early points on offer after the Jaguares are penalised for a dangerous tackle. McKenzie from 38m out, right in fornt. Never a doubt as it sails over the black dot.

40min: JAG 6-17 CHI

Back underway in Buenos Aires with a Chiefs kickoff. Kremer still has four minutes in the bin.

HT: JAG 6-17 CHI

And the Chiefs hold on! Another costly error in the form of a knock-on metres from the line sees the Jaguares come away with nothing from their late surge. Could prove to be a massive moment from the match.

Jaguares have been their own worst enemies this game with issues at lineout time and handling errors. Chiefs are playing patient footy and taking the chances they're given, which is led to the score we're currently seeing. We'll be back soon for the second half!

40min: JAG 6-17 CHI

Okay. NOW they have one last shot before halftime. Jaguares forwards rumble over the line but it's held up. Ref signals for a scrum and the halftime hooter goes soon after. Jaguares 5m out and needing to score here.

39min: JAG 6-17 CHI

Jaguares will get one last shot to score before halftime as they get another penalty for a head-high tackle. They kick for touch again and it's a 5m lineout.

38min: JAG 6-17 CHI

Chiefs can't convert this time as they're penalised for being offside in a kick-chase. Jaguares relieve some pressure with a kick to touch and it's 10m from halfway. Wee pause in play for water and minor niggles.

36min: JAG 6-17 CHI

JAG YELLOW! It goes from bad to worse for the Jaguares! They're down to 14 for the next 10 minutes as Kremer is sent off for killing the ball. That also gives the Chiefs a penalty and they thump it for touch. Chiefs lineout 10m from the tryline.

35min: JAG 6-17 CHI

CHI TRY! Chiefs are in with a brilliant kick from Marty McKenzie! He chips it over the rushing Jaguares defence. It hits the post and is sitting there waiting for someone to dive on it and the Chiefs do to score. The way McKenzie kicked that almost certainly made it look like he was aiming for the post and if he was, what a stunner!

33min: JAG 6-10 CHI

Jaguares are penalised for a high tackle. That will give the Chiefs a great attacking position as McKenzie's kick finds touch 5m from the tryline. Attacking lineout coming up.

31min: JAG 6-10 CHI

Jaguares can't break the line and it leads to an error. Basic knock-on in the tackle. Chiefs scrum on halfway.

29min: JAG 6-10 CHI

Chiefs give up a penalty for entering the ruck incorrectly. Jaguares kick for touch and get a lineout 10m inside Chiefs half. They need this one to stick and it doesn't! Chiefs steal it and McKenzie thumps it downfield. Jaguares will have to set up their attack just inside their half instead now.

27min: JAG 6-10 CHI

Chiefs not mucking around after the deep kickoff from the Jaguares. They clear and put the ball in touch 10m from halfway. Jaguares bungle yet another lineout as the ball off the top to the halfback goes to ground. Chiefs recover it and look for a counter attack down the right wing. The final pass can't stick and it's a knock on. Jaguares scrum 15m from their line.

25min: JAG 6-10 CHI

CHI TRY! Ardron runs off the back of the scrum and is brought down inches from the chalk. Two more pick-and-gos draw the Jaguares defence in and it's a skip pass to an unmarked Damian McKenzie who goes over to score on the right wing. He adds the extras too to push the new lead to four. Pressure converted to points.

22min: JAG 6-3 CHI

Chiefs work the ball with the forwards for 14 phases but can't crack the line. The grinding does lead to a penalty though and the Chiefs, again, forgo the free points and call for a scrum. It's 5m from the tryline, in the middle of the pitch. Plenty of attacking options.

21min: JAG 6-3 CHI

Chiefs get a penalty as the Jaguares botch yet another lineout. Jaguares recover the loose throw but don't release at the ensuing lineout and the whistle goes. Chiefs could take the three but they want more for the time they've spent down here. Kick into touch. 5m lineout coming up.

19min: JAG 6-3 CHI

Chiefs attack looks promising and as McKenzie pass finds Alaimalo on the left wing in space but he's crunched in the one-on-one tackle. Chiefs try to recover but it's sloppy and the ball eventually goes into touch. Jaguares lineout on their 22m.

17min: JAG 6-3 CHI

Jaguares waste their chance as they lose the ball off the lineout. Chiefs clear and it's a thumping McKenzie kick. Bounces deep into the Jaguares 22m. Home side recovers and clears for a Chiefs lineout now. 20m from Jaguares' line.

16min: JAG 6-3 CHI

Jaguares forward pack dominate the scrum and earn a penalty! Chiefs pack kept collapsing and the ref's had enough. Jaguares kcik for touch and will get a lineout 15m from the Chiefs' tryline.

14min: JAG 6-3 CHI

Chiefs control the ball around the middle of the paddoc for 13 phases but aren't getting much ground. Jaguares are pressuring them with a smothering defence so far and not allowing any of that freestyle play Kiwi teams are known for. The Chiefs attack ends with a forward pass so it's a Jaguares scrum 10m from halfway.

11min: JAG 6-3 CHI

JAG THREE! Sure enough, Jaguares back in front with the 40m penalty.

10min: JAG 3-3 CHI

BOOM! Chiefs look to run the ball out from their 22m off the kickoff but Damian McKenzie gets smoked in a big hit. Chiefs are driven back deep into their 22m and forced to clear. The kick misses touch and Jaguares look to counter attack. They go down 40m out and it's a penalty for the homeside for another incorrect ruck entry. SHould be three more points from right in front.

9min: JAG 3-3 CHI

CHI THREE!  Chiefs strike back immediately after a poor clearance off kickoff from the Jaguares. They attack in the midfield off the lineout with the McKenzie brothers to get inside the 22m. Jaguares are penalised for wrongly entering the ruck and that leads to the score being tied up with Damian's boot.

6min: JAG 3-0 CHI

JAG THREE! No advantage gained from the Jaguares so they come back and take the free points on offer right in front. Early lead for the homeside.

4min: JAG 0-0 CHI

Chiefs attack the midfield off the scrum but there's a knock on and it's scooped up by the Jaguares. Jaguares rumble into the Chiefs' 22m and have an advantage for a dangerous tackle.

3min: JAG 0-0 CHI

Shaky start for both sides. McKenzie manages to get a clearing kick away into touch but it's just outside his 22m. Jaguares knock it on at the lineout so that's a Chiefs scrum just outside their 22m.

0min: JAG 0-0 CHI

We're underway in Buenos Aires witha Jaguares kickoff.
