Dan Carter all smiles after neck surgery success - 'The long road to recovery starts'

April 11, 2019

All Black great Dan Carter is facing a long time on the sidelines after having successful neck surgery.

Carter had surgery on his cervical spine after an issue with it was discovered last month while he underwent a medical test to play for his old French club, Racing 92.

The issue was so serious that it cancelled the 37-year-old's return to the club.

"I'm incredibly disappointed that I won't be able to join Racing for the rest of their season," Carter said in an Instagram post at the time.

"During some routine medical checks, we discovered that I have an issue with my neck that needs to be addressed. I'm really grateful to Kobe, who were supportive in allowing me to temporarily return to Paris.

"Now, the focus switches to fixing the issue, surgery and rehab. Huge thanks to everyone for their support."

Carter has since taken to social media again to update his progress, posting a picture of himself posing and smiling in a hospital bed after his surgery.

"Another challenge to conquer! Happy my neck surgery went well and now the long road to recovery starts," he said on Twitter.

Prior to the neck problem surfacing, Carter guided the Kobe Kobelco Steelers to the Japanese Top League title last year and was named MVP for his efforts.
