Carlos Spencer plays down Beauden Barrett's Hurricanes return

February 19, 2019

The assistant coach gave nothing away about the star's 2019 introduction.

Hurricanes assistant coach Carlos Spencer kept his cards close to his chest about the return of All Blacks star Beauden Barrett, as his side prepare to face the Crusaders in Super Rugby.

Having missed the opening round win over the Waratahs, Barrett has returned to training with the Hurricanes this week, given a longer off-season break in which he got married.

However, with the versatile James Marshall ruled out with injury, Barrett could find himself back in the side sooner than anticipated.

Speaking to media though, Spencer didn't give anything away over Barrett's possible return.

"Good question. That's probably a question you ask Plum [coach John Plumtree]," he said.

"Not too sure actually, you'll have to ask Plum."

Spencer also heralded the return of Barrett to the side, with youngster Fletcher Smith and Jackson Garden-Bachop the only other specialist first-fives in the Hurricanes' ranks.

"Having Beaudy back in the camp full time is not only great for him but for the team as well."

The Hurricanes travel to face the Crusaders in Christchurch on Saturday.
