Brodie Retallick called other Kiwi Super Rugby skippers to get advice on being Chiefs captain

February 14, 2019

Retallick will lead the squad solo to start the season until co-captain Sam Cane is back up and running again.

Chiefs co-captain Brodie Retallick took the opportunity to ask All Blacks skipper Kieran Read for pointers, while on a promo shoot in Auckland last month.

Retallick has been appointed the Chiefs' co-captain alongside Sam Cane for the 2019 Super Rugby season.

The 27-year-old lock told reporters in Hamilton today that he has been chatting with fellow All Blacks teammates around the country for some tips.

"I've talked to other couple of captains around New Zealand and asked for a few pointers," said Retallick.

"I just went and talked to Reado [Kieran Read] when I found out [captaincy role], we were up in Auckland in the January window for a promo with the All Blacks.

"So went and had a quiet word and asked if he had any tips for me – he had some good advice, it was good."

The 73 Test All Blacks lock says he knows one way to stay on the referee's good side.

"I've got a fair bit of an idea, don't yell at him.

"It's definitely something I have to think a little bit about - not getting frustrated but I guess it's just something that comes with the job."

Retallick will lead the Chiefs against the Highlanders tomorrow night in Hamilton, with co-captain Cane set to return to rugby action around May.
