'The boys will follow him' – Scott Barrett captaincy an easy choice for Crusaders

November 13, 2019

Barrett takes the reigns of the Super Rugby champions in Sam Whitelock's absence.

Crusaders coach Scott Robertson is confident that Scott Barrett is the right man to lead the side in their quest for a fourth-straight Super Rugby title.

With the likes of Sam Whitelock given a sabbatical, and Kieran Read and Ryan Crotty among the senior players to have departed the Crusaders, Barrett will lead a fresh-faced Crusaders side for their 2020 season.

Speaking to media today, Robertson threw his support firmly behind Barrett in his first full time captaincy role.

"He's won three championships in a row," Robertson said.

"He's been captain before. I've had a lot of great conversations with Scooter [Barrett] coming in to captain.

"He'll choose a couple of vice-captains that can help him along the way.

"But we trust him. He's got an incredible engine, he plays well each week.

"He'll draw on the guys in the group to help support him, so the transition for him is to play well.

"We've set all the structure up so he can get all the support he requires, but the boys will follow him - that's the most important thing."

The Crusaders begin their Super Rugby title defence on February 1, taking on the Waratahs in Christchurch.
