Blues use bye week to work on 'poor' breakdown as they aim to halt losing streak

May 1, 2019

Patrick Tuipulotu was brutally honest about where the team fell short against the Highlanders and Chiefs.

The Blues have used the bye week to work on the breakdown as they aim to snap a two-match losing streak and get their Super Rugby campaign back on track.

Having started to pull together some impressive results, the Auckland side's Super Rugby progress came to a shuddering halt against the Chiefs and Highlanders, before they had a welcome week off.

Despite sitting fourth-bottom overall, Blues lock Patrick Tuipulotu remains wary of the threat posed by the Brumbies forward pack, despite David Pocock remaining under an injury cloud.

He hasn't played since early March.

"The last two games against the Chiefs and Highlanders, our breakdown was quite poor, it was something we were pretty honest about in our reviews on Monday," he told 1 NEWS.

"It's something we need to be good at in Super Rugby, and we've been training that this week, the breakdown.

'If you're coming up against guy like David Pocock and the loosies at the Brumbies, they'll want to target that breakdown as other teams have, for us to get that right is pretty important."

The Blues are moving in the right direction under Leon MacDonald, but their top eight hopes remain in the balance.

They have a tough run coming up, with their trip to Canberra followed by the Hurricanes, Chiefs, Crusaders and Bulls.

"Without thinking too far ahead it's pretty tough, brutal, but I think in saying that we've got a couple of home games as well," Tuipulotu said.

"At home we're pretty good, working on our game away is crucial at this time of the season."
