Black Ferns Sevens cap off remarkable 2018, winning prestigious Lonsdale Cup

December 4, 2018

Tyla Nathan-Wong spoke to 1 NEWS after claiming her side's latest trophy.

The Black Ferns Sevens' remarkable 2018 has taken another leap forward, with the team winning the New Zealand Olympic Committee's Lonsdale Cup last night.

The Lonsdale Cup, awarded for the most outstanding contribution to an Olympic or Commonwealth Games sport, is just the latest silverware in the Black Ferns' Sevens trophy cabinet, breaking the two-year run of canoe sprinter Lisa Carrington, who picked up back to back awards in 2016-17.

So far in 2018, the Black Ferns Sevens have won gold at the Commonwealth Games in April, defeating Australia with a stunning try after the final siren, as well as taking the Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco in July.

However, their most impressive feat comes in the form of their five-straight tournament wins on the World Sevens Series, having not lost since a defeat to Australia back in January.
