The 27-year-old's contract with NZ Rugby finishes at the end of 2019.

Hurricanes skipper Beauden Barrett is remaining tight-lipped about his playing future in New Zealand after the Rugby World Cup in Japan.

The 27-year-old told reporters in Wellington today that his focus right now is his side's Super Rugby match with the Melbourne Rebels tomorrow at Westpac Stadium.

"I'll talk about that [playing future in New Zealand] in due course, I'll just focus on the game tomorrow at the moment," said Barrett.

All Blacks lock Sam Whitelock announced an extended four year contract with NZ Rugby, which includes a stint to play for Japanese club Panasonic – Barrett's contract with NZ Rugby is set to be up at the end of 2019.

"Look my team is working on it and I'm being patient, I'll be ready to hopefully announce something soon if all things fall into place.

"I don't know the ins and outs of his [Whitelock] contract, I don't want to comment."

Barrett has won the world rugby player of the year award twice and has played 73 Tests for the All Blacks. Having won a Rugby World Cup title in 2015, while also clinching a Super Rugby title in 2016 with the Hurricanes.
