Ardie Savea fends off overseas offers, re-signs with NZ Rugby until 2021

December 19, 2018

With Sam Cane ruled out for the remainder of the season, Savea has become the first choice No.7.

All Blacks loose forward Ardie Savea won't be following his brother overseas after announcing today he has re-signed with New Zealand Rugby.

Savea took to social media to announce his future, describing the decision as very tough but ultimately he was happy with staying in New Zealand until the end of 2021.

"Truly blessed to have re-signed with NZ for 2020-2021," Savea said on Instagram.

"To be honest was a very tough decision but being at home with family and close friends and the opportunity to play for the All Blacks, Hurricanes and Wellington I couldn't leave.

"Thank you to the fans for the on going support. Can’t wait to get stuck in to 2019 with my Canes brothers."

The 25-year-old shone on the end-of-year tour as the starting No.7 in place of the injured Sam Cane, earning praise from coach Steve Hansen for his vastly improved defensive game.

"He's got the physicality in his game now, like he's always been a genuine athlete with the ball," said Hansen last month.

"But he's now stealing ball, he's making good tackles and he's been forced having to do that - with Sammy (Sam Cane) not being there.

"He's stepped up to the plate and he's got confidence out of being - knowing he's going to be selected every week."

It was reported earlier this year French clubs were looking to snatch up Savea after his current deal wrapped up in 2019.
