All Blacks stars Brodie Retallick and Beauden Barrett nominated for World Rugby try of the year award

October 31, 2018

All Blacks stars Beauden Barrett and Brodie Retallick have been nominated for World Rugby's try of the year award.

Both of their tries were in different Wallabies Tests in 2018, but both began with Retallick securing a turnover.

In Barrett's try, Retallick turned the ball over deep in the All Blacks own 22 before the New Zealand side sent the ball out wide to Damian McKenzie.

The livewire utility back made a darting run, weaving around a few Wallabies defenders before passing the ball to Anton Lienert-Brown around halfway.

He drew in one Wallabies defender and passed the ball to Ben Smith.

Smith realising Barrett was outside him, gave him the ball to finish off the play, with the All Blacks first-five dotting down over the right hand corner to score.

In Retallick’s try he began the play with a turnover just outside the All Blacks’ own 22, before the backs spread the ball wide to Codie Taylor who threw a clever inside pass to a charging Barrett.

After a right edge attack by the All Blacks they managed to shift the ball back into Barrett’s hands down the left flank who then offloaded the ball to Retallick.

Beauden Barrett dives over the try line for his 4th try.

The All Blacks lock charged down the side-line, throwing a dummy which bamboozled Wallabies first-five Bernard Foley before crossing over to score.

Two other tries are in the running for the award, scored by New Zealand-born Scottish international Shaun Maitland and Irish forward CJ Stander.

Barrett won the accolade back in 2013 - no other player has ever won the award twice. The winner will be announced on November 25 at the World Rugby Awards.
