All Blacks rookie Dalton Papalii explains pre-game ritual: 'Sleep as much as I can'

July 26, 2019

Papalii says there's nothing like a good kip before a big match.

Rookie All Blacks flanker Dalton Papalii says he doesn't care what number is on his back, just wanting to do the best for the team when he takes the field against the Springboks tomorrow night.

Papalii, 21, has been named on the bench by coach Steve Hansen for tomorrow night's clash, looking to add to his two Test caps, covering all three loose forward positions.

Speaking to 1 NEWS at the All Blacks' fan day in Wellington, Papalii spoke about his non-preference in position, just happy to be given a run in the black jersey.

"Six or seven, I'm not too sure," Papalii said. "If I get on that field, I'm going to try and do my best for the team.

"I prefer to play six, but six, seven or eight I don't mind, I just want to do my bit for the team."

About to play his first Test on home soil, after appearances against Japan and Italy, Papalii is relishing being part of the senior All Blacks set up.

"It's been pretty good. [I'm] learning off most of the old boys. Learning a few tricks of the trade and how to prepare for big games like this."

As for his own pre-match routine, Papalii likes to keep it simple.

"I try to sleep as much as I can to be honest, come night time, the occasion's massive.

"All the blood's boiling. Most of the day [I] try and sleep as much as I can."
