All Blacks assistant warns not to expect raft of changes after Bledisloe draw

October 14, 2020

John Plumtree said there’s no rush to look at trying new combinations.

All Blacks assistant coach John Plumtree has warned punters selectors won't make huge changes to the team's line-up for Sunday's second Bledisloe Test.

The All Blacks selectors turned heads last week when they opted to continue the dual playmaker system the team tried to implement last year rather than use in-form players - such as Hurricanes fullback Jordie Barrett - in their regular positions.

The team went on to grab a 16-16 draw against the Wallabies in Wellington last Sunday, although the Australians dominated the match in key statistics such as territory and possession and kept the All Blacks attack quiet.

Regardless, Plumtree said changes will be minimal.

"We've had one Test, we're not going to make wholesale changes," Plumtree said.

"We'd be mad to do that."

Plumtree fended off questions around Beauden Barrett after he was named to start at fullback last week instead of first-five but did discuss the prospect of more rookies earning caps after three youngsters - Caleb Clarke, Hoskins Sotutu and Tupou Vaa'i - all earned debuts.

"It's still early and it's still early for some of those youngsters - they're still getting used to this environment," he said.

"They'll get their opportunities - it's just a case of them getting used to the All Blacks way."

Ian Foster names his team for the second Bledisloe Test at 11.30am Friday.
