Women's rights delivered blow after Tonga bans girls from school rugby or boxing, despite promised funding injection from NZ

Tonga has banned girls from school rugby or boxing, despite promised funding injection from New Zealand.

Tonga’s government has banned girls from playing rugby or boxing at the Kingdom’s public schools saying it goes against cultural tradition.

A letter was sent from the Ministry of Education to public schools last week and has drawn widespread criticism.

President of the Tonga Women's Rugby Association Fehoko Tu'ivai says the move is unfortunate as there are many opportunities at international level for their women rugby players.

"How can we teach our girls to be independent when we keep making choices for them," Ms Tu'ivai said.

The impact will be felt at top level as the development pathway through the high schools is now cut off.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says she also disagrees with the decision and young women should be given choices.

New Zealand has promised $10 million over a five year period to encourage children in Tonga and other pacific countries into sport.

Ms Ardern says the programme which includes rugby for girls will continue as it is happening through the villages as opposed to through schools.

But she says New Zealand will keep an eye on the way it's operating.
